Graduated from the Zagreb Classical Grammar School in 1970. In 1977 graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy, Zagreb University, in Philosophy and Indology as two majors, and in 1978 in Linguistics (major) and Ancient Greek Philology (minor) as a parallel study.

In 1978 completed his M. A. thesis “Modal Verbs and Auxiliary Verb in the Framework of the Hindi Verbal System”.

In 1983 attained his Ph.D. in Philology with the thesis entitled “Problems of Exegesis of the Rigvedic Hymns”.

1978-1984 assistant lecturer in the Department of Linguistics and Oriental Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. 1984 assistant professor. 1992 associate professor in the same department. 1998 full professor. 2003-2017 professor with tenure in the Department of Oriental Studies, now Department of Indology and Far Eastern Studies.

1978-1979 Indological specialization in the Braj Bhasha and the Middle Hindi Bhakti literature at the University in Bonn.

1989-1990 visiting assistant professor at the University of Delhi in the Department of Slavic Studies; also lectured in the Department of Sanskrit.

1996-1997 guest associate professor at Harvard University in the Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies, where he spent his sabbatical as a Fulbright scholar. Lectured a comparative philological course scheduled as a subject for graduate students in Indian Studies, Philosophy, Greek Philology, Religious Studies and Linguistics.

Research interests

Main scholarly contributions lie in the field of exegesis and interpretation of the Ṛksaṃhitā in the Indo-European, Indo-Iranian and Indian context, of the philological analysis of text history of the classical Upaniṣads and of the Bhagavadgītā, and in the comparative research of the beginnings of Indian philosophy, esp. in comparison with the Greek philosophy. Other contributions in the field of classical Sanskrit literature (kāvya), in Indian philosophy and religions, in Old, Middle and New Indo-Aryan linguistics, and in general, comparative and Croatian linguistics.

Teaching

Teaches Indian Philology: lectures and seminars in Sanskrit, Middle Indo-Aryan, Hindi, Ancient Indian Literature and in Old Iranian (Avestan, Old Persian).

At the graduate level study (doctoral study) of linguistics in Zagreb, he teaches the course Linguistics and Philology.

Since 1992 he teaches Indian Philosophy and Indian Religions in the undergraduate program of Philosophy and Religions at the Faculty of Philosophy and Religious Sciences in Zagreb. Since 2017 professor with tenure at this Faculty.

Functions and memberships

Head of the Chair of Indology. In 2004 headed the Chair of Sinology, and the newly established free three-year study of Sinology. In 2007 headed the Chair of Japanology.

In 1989 took active part in the establishment of the Study of Religious Sciences at the Faculty of Philosophy of the S. J., since 2017 Faculty of Philosophy and Religious Sciences.

In 1992 he was one of the founders of the Croatian Studies at the University of Zagreb, in charge of the interdisciplinary study of Croatian culture.

As Head of the Department of Linguistics and Oriental Studies in 1991-1995, he established the studies of Turkology and Hungarology and the Chair of Mathematical Linguistics.

Since 2004, he has been given the task to develop the study of Sinology, later also of Japanology, and since 2012 the study of the Romani language (being a New-Indo-Aryan language) and culture.

1991 – 2003 and 2016 – 2022 president of the Croatian Pan-European Union. Since 2003 and again since 2022 Honorary President of the CPEU.

Since 1995 first vice-president of the International Pan-European Union. In 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 reelected to that position.

In January 1996 prepared the exhibition on the history of Croatian art and culture in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It was mounted later in Paris, Vienna, Cairo, Dresden, Berlin, Munich, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, etc.

1992-1993 president of the Croatian Philosophical Society. Reorganized it, organized seven scholarly symposia and helped promoting philosophical publications. In 1992 established the regular international conference ‘Days of Franciscus Patricius’ in Cres, which became the most important conference of the Croatian Philosophical Society.

1993 -1998 vice-president of the Croatian National Commission for UNESCO.

1994 – 1998 and 1998-2000 member of the National Commission for High Education.

2000 – 2003 member of the Council of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

2004 – 2008 member of the National Commission for Science.

2017 – 2022 member of the National Commission for Science, Higher Education and Technological Development.

Initiated and co-organizes the Dubrovnik International Conference on the Sanskrit Epics and Puranas (DICSEP 1994, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2020, 2023), which became the leading regular international conference in the field of Sanskrit epic literature.

Member of the International Association of Sanskrit Studies and of its International Consultative Committee, of the American Oriental Society, International Association of Vedic Studies, Croatian Philosophical Society, Croatian Philological Society, etc.

Since 1992 associate member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Since May 18, 2000, fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Editorial work

He was a member of the editorial board (Oriental and Indo-European Religions) of the Lexicon of Religions of the Lexicographical Institute (published 2002).

Member of the editorial board of the Proceedings of the Dubrovnik International Conference on the Sanskrit Epics and Purāṇas, since 2002 its general editor (for DICSEP3, DICSEP4, DICSEP5, DICSEP 6…). As general editor, edited volumes III (2005): Epics, Khilas and Purāṇas: Continuities and Ruptures, IV (2009): Parallels and Comparisons, V (2016): On the Growth and Composition of the Sankrit Epics and Purāṇas, VI (2022) Mythic Landscapes and Argumentative Trails in Sanskrit Epic Literature, Volumes VII and VIII are in preparation. The whole series is published by both the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Zagreb, and Dev Publishers & Distributors, New Delhi.

Since 2001 general editor of the Vols. IV and V of the encyclopaedic edition Croatia and Europe published by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Vol. IV published in 2009; Vol. V in preparation, to be published in 2023). After the edition in Croatian follow the editions in English and French.

Prizes and awards

1995 awarded by the President of the Republic of Croatia with the Medal of “Danica Hrvatska” (Croatian Morning Star) with the image of Rogerius Boskovich for merits in scholarship.

2003 granted the National Award for Science (in the Humanities) for the year 2003.

2012 received a felicitation plaque of the Akhila Bharatiya Sanskrita Sahitya Sammelana for his contribution to Sanskrit literature at the 15th World Sanskrit Conference in New Delhi.

2012 received two national awards for the best literary translation for the book Amaruśataka, ArTresor, Zagreb 2011.

2017 granted the National Award for Science (in the Humanities) for the year 2016.
